EDITORIAL: We kind of forgot about the Haitians in Houston, haven’t we?

November 12, 2021

We had a good discussion with a Haitian activist in Houston, and he told us that he is working feverishly to get help to the hundreds of Haitians holed up in US detention facilities.

While we were chasing behind Brian Laundrie and Gabby Petito along with the COP26, we kind of forgot that Houston area police were rounding up Haitian migrants from horseback like it was 1863. Quite a shame at how easily we can forget the poor and unfortunate and chase after the “in story” of the day.

People typically only care about themselves. Secondly, they only then feign to care about other matters if a lot of other people seem to care about it. So as the Haitian crisis at the US/Mexico border got off of the news, so did any care and attention to the Haitian plight went along with it.

We also forgot about the earthquake in Haiti earlier this year too, huh? The one that was larger than the earthquake in 2010 that pretty much flattened the country, leaving thousands dead. You see, it wasn’t “our” earthquake. It didn’t happen in our country and it is not me or anyone of my family members trying to cross into the US from Mexico.

What a shameful bunch we are. Alas, there is some hope as someone is willing to organise assistance for his countrymen. This is by no means an endorsement of anyone or any organisation, just saying at least he is out there willing to put his name to aid. God bless pastor Cius!

Moving forward, what can we do to help? Probably nothing much, but I guess we can try.
