The chief executive officer of Arawak Media said “we are providing opportunities” for Caribbean and Central American people through our contests.

Youri Kemp, also the editor of Caribbean Magazine Plus, appeared on the talk show “Analyze This” on WTJX-FM 93.1 out of the US Virgin Islands with host Neville James on Monday morning to talk about CMP’s upcoming book of poetry and the ongoing Short Story Contest and a whole lot more.

Mr Kemp spoke about the soon-to-be-launched book of Poetry from the 2021 Caribbean Magazine Plus Poetry Contest titled “Signs of the Sun- A selection of poems from the 2021 Caribbean Magazine Plus Poetry Contest” and said that if it were not for this opportunity, the top two finishers would have probably still been sharing their talents with only their friends and family members. But now they have a chance to be recognized globally for their skills and talent. “We are about giving people opportunities,” he said.

The Poetry Contest ran from May to September, 2021 and received just under 100 paid entrants and over 250 entries in total. Only the paid entrants have the opportunity to make the inaugural poetry book. If your entry was not in this year’s book it either meant you were an unpaid entrant or your entry had no name attached to it so the researchers had a hard time tracking down who the entry belonged to, or in one case in particular, the entrant had the poem “locked” and the team could not cut and paste it to put it in Word form to be a part of the anthology.

Mr Kemp also said that there are other contests on the horizon, with one currently ongoing until January 14, 2022 in the Short Story Contest being evaluated by University of the West Indies English Professor Nicola Hunte.

There will also be a speech competition being organised for February to April, 2022 in conjunction with the District 81 Toastmasters association and will be open to the four major languages of the Caribbean/Central American region- English, Spanish, Dutch and French.
