“Change is coming” for Haiti said a presidential hopeful as “new blood” is needed to end the wasteful political manoeuvring.
Jude Elie, president of political action group Sove Lone, told Caribbean Magazine Plus that after his first political rally in Les Cayes on January 9, Haitians have been telling him that they want “change” and are willing to stand in solidarity with him for that change.
Mr Ellie also said: “The turnout was great. We had over 3,500 people turn out, they didn’t expect to see so many people show up, but when they came out people said ‘WOW!”
Mr Ellie also said: “Change is coming, change is coming. They have been waiting for me. They need a new face, new blood and the change is coming. They also want Haiti strong, so they are happy. The kids were there, a lot of children came out. They are happy that I focus on education. There are a lot of needs in Haiti.”
Haiti is still in political turmoil, still reeling from the assassination of its last president, Jovenel Moise, last year August and no successor has been named as all are waiting for presidential elections to be called so the Haitian people can cast their votes.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry, Moise’s last appointment prior to his assassination and the country’s caretaker, too has faced an assassination attempt on his life during the Haitian Independence Day Celebrations as he left a church in Gonaives.
When asked about Mr Henry possibly running for the presidential spot as well when elections are called, Mr Ellie re-iterated, “Haitian want change, Henry is doing his political manoeuvring trying to stay in power, but you know what? People are waiting on a change. They want a chance for a general election.
“They would love to think that a political challenge in Haiti is welcomed, but they just want to get involved to help our country. That’s all. That’s very important. That’s what they’re looking for a better country with other visions.
“He (Henry)has not made things easy for the population now, but I have no doubt that he too will want to run for president of Haiti.”
Prime Minister Henry later stated that he hoped to hold the elections in early 2022, but no word has been given yet on a date from the Haitian government.
Whenever the date is called, Mr Ellie believes he has the right type of support needed to win. He has national support from all sectors of the Haitian populace, but more importantly he has the critical support of rural Haitians.
