The Biden administration in the US have their hands full. This Ukrainian stand-off with Russia has them pre-occupied, so much so that American media has stopped talking about the COVID-19 pandemic. But does that mean we are now out of the worst of it with the pandemic?
From the recent revelation from the PAHO director one would understand that COVID-19 infections are down, but deaths related to the disease are up. So in a sense she is telling us that the last of the weak specimens are dying off and we are now becoming more immune to the disease.
Barring any new variant, we look to be in the last stages of this disease. So it is only fair that American media start to focus on other matters.
Are we going to war?
The drums of war beat louder and louder in Eastern Europe. Biden looks hell bent on going into the Ukraine. My feeling is that he is not after Russia, but Russia is just the excuse to mash down the Ukraine for whatever reason. Just my hunch on that.
But what are we to do? Nothing much ants like us can do when the elephant starts to rumble. The Caribbean is insignificant in this global war theatre and the only time we become relevant is when we entertain one of America’s enemies, which seems to be what Grenada, Venezuela and Cuba are doing with courting Russia.
The Caribbean people must brace for the worst of this if war breaks out. Let Mitchell, Maduro and Diaz-Canel be mindful that courting Russians at this time may not be the wisest thing to do, but for the rest of us we have to deal with travel disruptions, higher price for food, oil and gasoline as all war brings these situations to bear.
