Just when we thought the passing of the legendary Gordon “Butch” Stewart would the controversies surrounding the Sandals Resorts Hotels end. But, it’s a new thing, new chairman in that of his seed, Adam Stewart, but the scandals just keep on popping up.
In case you haven’t heard it all over American news, three tourists have died on the Sandals property in Great Exuma, Bahamas. No one knows what happened to the three people yet, but the island gossip has gone from everything from poisoned fish to carbon monoxide poisoning. Truth is, no one knows yet until the toxicology report comes back from the laboratories. So we have to wait until the report comes back.
But, back to the lacklustre company that is Sandals. Once thought of as a shining beacon of Caribbean entrepreneurship, drive and tenacity is nothing but a pile of scandalous goop!
Just a few years ago, Sandals had a score of sexual assaults on their properties to the point that that too made US news stations in a news frenzy unlike anything we have ever seen before. It was if US news stations were trying to shut Sandals Resorts down off of bad press. It had to be something Butch Stewart did that we didn’t know.
But, even more than the sexual assaults, Sandals has a history of union busting and firing mass amounts of employees in an attempt to hold Caribbean governments by the testicles. The Antigua and Barbuda scandal along with the Bahamas mass firing come to mind.
Sandals is now killing people on their property. Gone wholesale, we see. We hope that the families of the deceased get some relief, but Sandals needs to be more closely monitored it seems.
