The Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) for the second round of the presidential elections to be held in Colombia on June 19 today began to arrive in the country in a staggered manner. This is the 22nd Mission that the OAS has deployed in the country and the 300th in its history.
The Chief of Mission and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, Eladio Loizaga, will be present at the beginning of next week. Lozaiga also headed the Mission for the first electoral round on May 29 and the legislative elections last March.
The Mission is composed of more than 80 specialists and international observers of 28 different nationalities and will have a wide territorial deployment in the different departments of the country. Over the next few days, the members of the Mission will meet with electoral and government authorities, political leaders, and representatives of civil society and other actors. The OAS technicians will will observe, among other activities, the tests of the computer systems of the pre-count and vote tally. After the elections, the Mission will present – as it did following the first round-a preliminary report with its observations and recommendations to contribute to the strengthening of electoral processes in Colombia.
