OAS and CAF Move Forward on Migration and Climate Change Agreements

The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) agreed to strengthen their cooperation in the areas of migration and climate change, according to an agreement signed in the framework of the IX Summit of the Americas that took place in Los Angeles last week.
OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro expressed his “deep satisfaction” that both institutions reached “concrete agreements” just months after signing a Memorandum of Understanding. “The fight against climate change, environmental preservation, migration issues, and local and community government issues are fundamental in the Americas. They improve people’s lives, they mean change, they have an immediate effect on people’s lives because they involve the sustainability of communities,” said Secretary General Almagro.

For his part, CAF President Sergio Díaz Granados said that the agreement signed is in line with the mandates reached at the IX Summit of the Americas, “especially those related to migration and climate change.” “We are moving forward in the preparation of our great agreement with the OAS to promote better public policies for climate action and positive biodiversity in the Americas,” said the head of CAF. “The Bank has had the support of all its members to carry out more operations associated with green finance, to improve the quality of life of citizens through very concrete initiatives at the city level and, of course, to work more with the private sector,” added the CAF President.

The OAS and CAF plan to hold a meeting of local governments with mayors from Latin America and the United States in 2023 in Denver, Colorado, with the objective of advancing migration and climate change policies.
