A new television show in Trinidad, “Kids So Amazing,” is already planning to go on the road by sourcing children from throughout the region to showcase their talents on a grand stage.
Sharon Cumberbatch, the show’s producer and creator, told Caribbean Magazine Plus that she wants to take Kids So Amazing throughout the Caribbean because of the success it has been in Trinidad and Tobago. “I need sponsorship I need to make sure that we can bring the kids in, put them up in a hotel, take care of the airline tickets, make a contact and each Caribbean country to source the talented kids because it might be cheaper for us to bring them in then we should go out to them. We can fly the kids in from all over the Caribbean and let them be a part of this phenomenon.”
Kids So Amazing, only in its first season, is already a hit in Trinidad and is hosted by Sharon’s son, local comedian Ro’Dey, who Sharon also manages. The show airs every Thursday at 8:00pm and every Saturday at 8:30pm with no less than three talent children a night, with talents ranging from music, art, farming, writing and much more.
The show is also more than just a showcase experience for the children, but they are taken on a tour of Trinidad and learn about their culture and see the sites around the island. “The parents come and ask me what’s next? After the show is completed because they know I have a successful son,” Sharon added.
Sharon also said: “We’re looking for children ages three to 13. We are looking for all unique talents, it doesn’t have to be singing or dancing. You can be a great mathematician or great at the sciences. You can be in a spelling bee and you can spell brilliantly. Anything that is unique and talented to you. That is what we want to display on the show. This season we had an author and she is six years old and she already wrote six books.”
Imagine all of this came from a moment when Sharon watched an episode of “Kids say the darndest things,” hosted by American comedian and television personality Steve Harvey. “I said, look: I need to put this show together. I had it just sitting there because we have other projects we were working on and all the time the project was in my mind developing, and developing and then the COVID-19 came down and we went into a lockdown.”
Clearly the COVID-19 lockdown was just the necessary time needed for the idea to not only incubate but to take critical form in Sharon’s mind because it has taken off like a rocket. “I said if I’m doing the show, it has to be international standard. I didn’t want to give them a tiny little stage, we used CNC3 as our broadcast partners with Star Global Production Studio as the production company and we used a venue by the name of Queen’s Hall, which is one of the finest auditoriums we have in Trinidad,” Sharon said.
That international standard is the look and feel Sharon wanted for the show and that is what she got.
