So many opportunities us as people in the Caribbean and Central American region are missing out on that we can have access to by virtue of being so close to the United States of America, but we miss out on nearly all of it.
The main thing we seem to be focused on is trying to enter the US as illegal immigrants, but none of our leaders want to emulate their system of democracy, openness and capitalism. Neither do we want vibrant and energetic markets, let alone top-tier infrastructure and new technologies.
The second thing we seem focused on is drug trafficking and money laundering, but nothing to do with building the enabling environments for the business sector, taking these government’s feet off of our necks.
The sad thing is we smile through all of this lacklustre effort we have put forth as a people. Take for example, we don’t even have an ICT backbone of connectivity between our own countries, but yet we are meeting to discuss regulations for the region as if we have done something worth meeting over.
It makes it seem as if the money spent on CARICOM and the Caribbean Development Bank is going to waste.
People, we are too close to America and the talent and opportunities therein to still be lagging behind so badly compared to other countries. We need to step it up. We no longer have any excuse for not knowing what’s available to us all- We all have cable television and internet access, so we see. Now we need to learn and apply!
