EDITORIAL: The OAS is most useless!

October 7, 2022

The Organisation of American States is proving more useless every day we watch them. When we first started out with this news agency and even before this, we looked forward with great anticipation from the OAS. We believed they were a strong organisation that could set wrongs right throughout the region.

But as the months and years flow on by, we realize they are only an occasional press release a week agency. What annoys me more with them is that they even have the nerve to send you a photo-release. Sometimes we get several of those from the OAS a week. Nothing but a bunch of pictures, no context, no discussion, no information. Just show and tell pictures. How empty.

Ask yourself: When was the last time the OAS was involved in any meaningful international discussion on any of the hot burning topics in the Western Hemisphere? We won’t even talk about global issues, but let’s take Venezuela, Nicaragua, Haiti and Cuba. Sure, they may send out an odd press release condemning some atrocity of abuse here and there on one of these countries. But are they even at the table? Does their word carry any weight? No it does not.

We dare say the OAS is even emptier than Barbados’s Mia Mottley, which is a shameful label to have. You don’t want to be that. What makes Ms Mottley a little better than the OAS as a group, agency and as an organisation is that Ms Mottley does not waste our tax payers dollars. She just bullshits whoever falls for it, which ain’t bad. We have learned to find these garden variety politicians quite amusing.

So the question is, is the OAS made impotent on purpose? Could be. But then again, why are we wasting money on such impotence? We may as well just disband it altogether because CARICOM serves the Caribbean’s needs quite well, if I may say so on their behalf.
