There has been a lot of interest from foreign countries in the Caribbean as of late. Over the last two years there has been a lot of attention from the international agencies too, it’s as if they are seriously courting the Caribbean for their skills and talent. I feel respected at the table as a result of it.
Why they are interested is a mystery to me? Maybe it’s because of the level of engagement by our leaders on this climate change front, telling the world and showing the world the devastation as a result of the impact of fossil fuels to the environment. Who would like nasty oil spills on such beautiful beaches, foisted upon inhabitants who had nothing to do with the oil spills in any degree? OR, the devastation of these Category 5 hurricanes that are destroying these beautiful countries nestled in the Atlantic Ocean.
OR, maybe, it is because there is political leverage in the Caribbean? If you did not know then now you know that the Caribbean is not one single polity. But it is made up of several countries that are all worth a vote a piece at placed like the United Nations. Courting a very amenable Caribbean can be advantageous to geopolitical strategy when gathering support for international initiatives.
It also could be that Vice President Kamala Harris is using her platform to bring about a spotlight on the region because of her Jamaican heritage? This is a longshot, by far. But if it is, then we should take it and milk that cow until its dry.
Ultimately, times change and the prejudices of the past change with generations. Let’s thank God that the region is now getting more recognition and respect.
