EDITORIAL: Jamaica has to chill on the homophobia now.

July 28, 2023

Jamaica’s recent row with the US over the proposed new Ambassador for the island nation being a homosexual has gotten out of hand. There was no reason for the Andrew Holness administration to reject the diplomat’s credentials because they were gay. It takes all types and would it have made a difference if they were a closet homosexual and you didn’t know about it? No it would not.

This homophobia in Jamaica has gone a bit too far in our estimation. Because, the US has struck back and have asked several Jamaican diplomats to leave the country immediately after their terms come to an end. Some of them have children in University and school. But this is the price you pay for this random hate.

It’s not as if the US asked Jamaica to change the Sodomy laws, even though they- and several other gay rights advocacy groups- have been lobbying for a change in the Sodomy laws. But this was not a part of that wider push. This was simply a homosexual looking for a job for their country. This is a very unfortunate look.

This magazine, while not a banner waiving supporter of the LGBTQ agenda in any degree. But we do recognize it is someone’s personal right to have sex or a relationship with who they wish to have one with.

All of this just puts Jamaica in a bad light and for something it did not need. Also, it has crippled its foreign affairs regime because those Jamaican diplomats stationed in the US may have unfinished work that needs to be tied up for someone else to take over, if the US decides to accept their diplomats again.

Something so mundane as the acceptance of a diplomat has mushroomed into something unsightly.

  1. Many descendants of enslaved African ancestors recognize the generational trauma and legacy of captivity, displacement, identity theft, rapine breeding of females and sodomy of young males as perpetuated throughout the imperial systems of church, academia and law enforcement.
No sane and civilized society condones the violation of basic human rights, which is why laws already exist in place to protect all persons, from theft to murder… Out of Many, One People suggests such equitable enforcement.
Jamaicans of all classes and sensibilities risk ongoing erosion of national sovereignty if another country is allowed to impose its will on their prevailing cultural and spiritual values as a standard for their youth going forward.
As a British Commonwealth country, Jamaican fanatics of the USA should apply the integrity of due diligence and learn the UK position.☮️
