EDITORIAL: Taking cyber-crime seriously!

August 18, 2023

People typically don’t take cyber-attacks seriously until it happens to them or their organisation, but we believe a pinch of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

The operations at Arawak Media and Caribbean Magazine Plus is attacked, phished and invaded on a daily basis. Oftentimes it is because someone clicked a silly little link, other times we are being probed by bots, just trolling the open internet for soft targets to compromise. Whatever it is, we have experienced it here and we try our best to have in place the best security software to protect the integrity of our operations.

The truth is, there is very little the average person can do that would protect them against an attack. Particularly if the attack is coming from a 15 or 16 year old nerd, sitting at home in his garage, idle and with lots of time on their hand to be persistent in trying passcode after passcode or dirty-link after dirty-link, just to get his or her kicks off that they can see your personal details or steal your identity.

We just want to preach the importance of vigilance and minimise the type of attacks to your personal system. Do not click links from unknown senders. Do not enter into these silly little contests that say you are eligible to win this, that or the other thing- they only want you to enter your personal information.

Be careful of how you use public computers, do not use your credit/debit card on any of them for any reason.

Lastly, invest in an antivirus system for your home/business and make a mental reminder to sweep the systems at least once a week. It doesn’t take long and you can keep the cleanup running while you do something else. Every little bit helps.

With more and more services online we have to take better care of ourselves to protect our life and wealth.
