EDITORIAL: Help is on the way for Haiti

October 3, 2023

Finally we have movement on a peace keeping mission for Haiti. How soon will international forces led by Kenya reach Haiti, some say they may be there before the end of October. Indeed, it is not the best option, but for what’s happening on the ground in Haiti, with the amount of gangs running rampant and the amount of people losing their lives due to the violence.

More importantly, elections are expected to be held in the embattled country before the end of November. So peace and order needs to be attainted before people can securely go to the polls and vote on their country’s leadership.

We have heard some statements from the eminent trio of Caribbean leaders, holding discussions with Haitian leaders and stakeholders in an attempt to solidify social cohesion in the run up to general elections.

So, a lot is at stake with the Kenyan led force on the ground in Haiti. The Bahamas said they are ready and it was Jamaica who brought up the idea of a peace keeping military force for Haiti, so they should not have an issue with sending a complementary troop to join Kenyan forces.

This is all around good news. Too bad that China and Russia and China abstained from the UN Security Council vote. It’s all politics. Pay it no mind. But for now, help is on the way for the Haitian people.
