The 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, better known as COP28 is underwhelming thus far. There is no run up or excitement or buzz about this year’s event. Kind of strange.
We guess that everyone is stretched out from the overhyped and ballyhooed COP27 last year where the promotions for the event could be likened to a political campaign ran by top tier public relations firms.
The other reason why the COP28 is underwhelming is because he larger, developed countries, know they promised certain commitments and have failed to deliver on them. The primary of which is a loss and damage fund that still is in logjam between member states on how it should be developed.
Plainly speaking, the larger, polluting countries don’t want to pay for the damage they create. They want to get away scott-free and not be held to account to the issues even they themselves admit is harmful to the environment.
Nevertheless, we just have to monitor it for what else is promised at the COP28 because it sure is awfully quiet in its promotion.
