Grenada turns 50 this year. Our Grenadian brothers and sisters have come a long way. Independence was granted on 7 February 1974 under the leadership of Eric Gairy, who became the first prime minister of Grenada as a sovereign state. The new country became a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.
Through the past 50 years they have undergone dramatic political change that is unlike no other English speaking Caribbean country. They were the only English speaking Caribbean country that was invaded by the US. They are also the only English speaking Caribbean country whose leader was assassinated.
For the better half of the last two decades, they were under the leadership of Dr Keith Mitchell, who has seen the country through many of its challenges. He was voted out of office in the last general election for a younger Dickon Mitchell who wishes to see the country through another two decades of solid leadership.
We wish the best for Grenada over its next 50 years. May God go with them.
While indepent Grenada is a young country, it has a very rich and robust history. Grenadians are leaders all over the world continuing the fight for Justice-racially, socially and economically. Happy 50th Anniversary to Grenada and it’s people locally and transnationally.
