EDITORIAL: What will Mulino do about the Canal drought?

May 10, 2024

Through all of the hoopla around the Panamanian presidential election, very little was said about the current Panama Canal drought, which has been said to be the worse drought the canal has experienced in its lifetime.

The Americas depend on that shipping lane through the canal. Without it, goods would have to travel around the horn or Argentina/Chile at the very least and goods will take much longer to get here and cost much more than they do now. Can you imagine ceramic cups becoming $30, or car batteries for a four door sedan becoming $500? I don’t want that to happen.

We need a solution for the canal. Perhaps this could be the catalyst towards a new way in which the canal sources water? Who knows? We are not engineers, but there should have been focus on the canal drought.

But all in all, we wish Mr Mulino all the best in his presidency. He has endured a lot during the campaign, from what we have read. We have no direct feeling or sentiment on how his presidency will evolve over time, but we know that the canal must be addressed head on.

Congrats to Panama on a relatively peaceful election.
