The then Soviet Union, prior to the anti-communist revolution in the 1990’s that led to the Russian Federation, always conducted exercises in the Caribbean and Latin American region.
From time immemorial they have sent fighter jets, naval fleets and trained personnel to the region for various reasons. This time is no different.
We know that tensions are high because of the war in the Ukraine and the posture the US has taken to Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine, but this military exercise is something Russia has been prone to do.
We should take no serious stock into it. What we should be monitoring, however, is the amount of destabilizing agents that may already be embedded into our politics and governmental systems, whether they are Russian, American or European. This is the bigger threat for us.
The Caribbean will not be a threatre for a “hot war” any time soon. The only hot war we will have is on the climate change front. As we have seen with the Bonn conference, we need to properly asses compensation for the loss and damage for what we have endured due to the climate abuses by larger countries like Russia and the US.
The report didn’t total the amount lost through climate change damage in the Caribbean, but rather it gave ways to analyze and ways to go about assessing it.
This is better than nothing.
