Gordon “Butch” Stewart, the Jamaican-born hospitality and hotel mogul who founded the Sandals Resorts International, one of the Caribbean’s most well-known, all-inclusive luxury vacation brands, died on January 4, 2021 in Miami. He was 79 years old.
Adam Stewart, deputy chairman of SRI and his son, will assume control of the company. The younger Stewart also said that his father was diagnosed with an undisclosed illness and decided to keep the matter private.
Along with ownership of SRI, Mr Stewart also at one time owned an airline, in addition to owning a newspaper in Jamaica that is published regionally, the Jamaica Observer.
He has won multiple awards for tourism over the course of his career.
