So all of Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness’s dirty little business is coming out. His hidden bank accounts revealed by the Integrity Commission is not surprising, but worrying.
It’s not surprising because we saw the handwriting on the wall that the surprise Nigel Clarke appointment to the International Monetary Fund would send some ripples through the government. Things would have to change and attention would have to be shifted for one thing of the other. So, this is just the natural course for these things.
This magazine has already said that Holness was blindsided by the Clarke IMF appointment. Now it seems that as the dust settles on the appointment, Holness is starting to flounder and his public image is taking a hit.
Even before all of this, Holness was seen dancing and prancing around at a Maroon event a few weeks back, just days after he announced a state of emergency and lockdown in the Clarendon Parish, we knew that something was up. Politicians only start dancing and cooning like fools when they are nervous about something or the other and it usually spells bad news for the country, especially Caribbean countries. It’s like we can smell the fear and the disgrace in ever jook and jive.
But, Clarke’s departure means a lot more than just a little promotion for him. It signals something else working on the inside of the Holness administration. We won’t cast any aspersions, but we will just continue to watch.
