CARICOM congratulates Suriname on the 49th Anniversary of Independence

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General has commended Suriname’s commitment to sustainable development, its vibrant cultural tapestry and role in CARICOM, as the Member State celebrates its 49th Anniversary of Independence.

In a message to the President of Suriname, His Excellency Chandrikapersad Santokhi ahead of the country’s independence anniversary on Monday, 25 November, Dr. Barnett said that the country can proudly reflect on the steady progress and the development it has achieved since 1975.

Highlighting the role Suriname plays in CARICOM, the Secretary-General said,

“Excellency, the Caribbean Community places great value on the role played by the Republic of Suriname to the regional integration movement, particularly in community development and cultural cooperation (including culture, gender, youth and sport).”

The full message reads as follows:

“Your Excellency:

On behalf of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), I extend warmest congratulations to the Government and People of the Republic of Suriname as you celebrate your Forty-Ninth Anniversary of Independence.

This accomplishment is significant in your journey as an independent nation. Suriname’s motto and core values of justice, faith and loyalty have shaped its unique national identity and spirit. You can proudly reflect on the steady progress and development achieved since 1975, which is testament to Suriname’s commitment to sustainable development.

Suriname’s rich culture is a vibrant tapestry woven from diverse ethnic influences. This melting pot of traditions is evident in the country’s music, dance and cuisine, adding to its distinct charm and character.

Excellency, the Caribbean Community places great value on the role played by the Republic of Suriname to the regional integration movement, particularly in community development and cultural cooperation (including culture, gender, youth and sport), and the promulgation of an Industrial Policy, for which you have lead responsibility in the CARICOM Quasi-Cabinet.

In this regard, your initiatives have strengthened relationships among CARICOM Member States and contributed to a more prosperous and cohesive Community.

As the Republic of Suriname celebrates this momentous occasion, I wish for the Government and People continued well-being, peace, prosperity and success in the years to come.”
