EDITORIAL: Trump’s tariffs a prelude to war

February 4, 2025

This has to be an act of war by the Trump administration. The threat of imposing tariffs on Chinese, Canadian and Mexican products, only to reverse the two latter and leaving it for China, is not so deft as he would make it believe.

It is clear the tariffs was meant for only China. He added Mexico and Canada as not to make it appear as if it is an overt act of war against one nation.

The US is bracing for war. We cannot say it any more clearly than that. Tarrification and also the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico, which lends itself to making it American territory and any attack or incursion in its territory will be akin to an act of war or an attack on the US. Add all of this to the threat of taking back the Panama Canal and also now taking Greenland, Trump is increasing the American Empire in strategic locations.

It’s clear this is a preparation for a hot war. And America’s enemies can’t say that they did not see it coming. Particularly for China and Iran.

But for now the tariffs for Canada and Mexico has been suspended for 30 days, so those countries can breathe a sigh of relief. How the tariffs will hurt China and its vast trade network remains to be seen. But war is a hard business.
