EDITORIAL: Haiti is burning again!

It seems like a perpetual thing that Haiti goes through spasms of protest and violence every several months or so. The country has not been right since the Jean Claude Duvalier regime and each time these protests get worse.

Someone said that their lack of English is the real reason why the United States does not give them the help they need. That and because most of the other Caribbean countries are fortunate enough to have Great Britain as its former colonist, someone who was committed to peace and stability, is the reason why the other Caribbean countries have not descended into absolute chaos as Haiti seems to do every so often- with tragic consequences.

Be that as it may, it appears as if the president, Jovenel Moïse, has made the mistake of firing a few judges that the people liked. Big mistake when “the people” like them. That and he arrested a few other insurrectionists he claims were plotting to overthrow his government.

Has he turned into dictator? Probably not. But that is not what folks may be thinking, however. Folks who may never get to understand the democratic principles that the rest of the Caribbean and Western world grew up in. For goodness sake, I know of educated English speakers who don’t know a lick about politics or the institutions that protect their freedoms- yet they still vote, or get a chance to vote. Something the Haitian people seem to forget is the real solution to a leader they don’t like or wish to get rid of.

At the risk of sounding glib, perhaps we really do need to “pray for Haiti” as this perpetual cycle of violence and political instability needs God’s intervention.

But, as we sit and wait and hope they settle down, we wish them the best and any support we can give to the people!
