A Bahamian fashion designer says that her brand is expanding and that the Caribbean market is “bigger than we realize.”

Indira Moss, owner/operator of ILASHAN Apparel & Handmade Jewelry, told Caribbean Magazine Plus that designing and fashion was always in her and that she didn’t just get into the business on a whim, she has been focused on fashion designing all of her life. We caught Ms Moss right after she had finished up a wedding project and spoke to her about her work and about how she got into the industry.

She said: “I always loved to draw and when I was really young, I would spend hours tracing and learning to draw the clothes in the pattern book in our house.”

Ms Moss also spoke about the Caribbean wide industry and said, “Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to meet a number of designers from around the Caribbean. They’re all talented with their own aesthetic and point of view.  When you think globally it seems like it’s so small, but the Caribbean fashion industry is bigger than we realize and there are Caribbean designers in many parts of the world.”

Despite acknowledging the wide market for fashion in the Caribbean and using the portal as an entry way into the wider fashion market, Ms Moss is still focusing on the Bahamian market and is continuing to “build her brand” and her reach is “expanding,” she said.

Even though she focuses primarily on the Bahamian market, her designs and fashion can be shipped abroad to customers all over the world and she has done so in the past.

Looking forward to the growing Caribbean fashion market Ms Moss said, “Everything takes time, but I do see the Caribbean fashion industry growing and Caribbean designers being featured and reaching customers throughout the world.”
