An Organization of American States (OAS) Good Offices Mission arrived in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on June 8, 2021 for a three-day visit . Composed of the permanent representatives of Canada, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and the United States, and supported by the OAS General Secretariat and the Special Representative of the Secretary General in Haiti , the mission was intended to facilitate a dialogue that would lead to free and fair elections.
The members of the Mission were received in audience by President Jovenel Moïse with the participation of the Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Claude Joseph. Members of the Mission also participated in several round tables, with more than 50 interlocutors from a wide range of civil society and political actors.
These meetings made it possible to discuss the challenges facing Haiti and to renew the commitment of stakeholders in Haiti to an inclusive democratic process leading to free and fair elections in the coming months. At each meeting, the members of the Bons Offices Mission requested:
– Commitment to representative democracy under the Inter-American Democratic Charter
– Commitment for free and fair legislative and presidential elections in 2021
– A transparent electoral process with the contribution of all stakeholders that will be credible for the Haitian people
– Compromise agreement to reach a political agreement for the benefit of the Haitian people
– Commitment against political violence and impunity and commitment to respect human rights
The Good Offices Mission welcomed the opportunity to dialogue directly with a wide range of stakeholders and a frank and open dialogue.
The Mission will now review the contributions it has received and, within two weeks, submit a report to the Chair of the Permanent Council with its findings, conclusions and recommendations.
The Good Offices Mission expresses its thanks to the President for inviting the Mission and to all stakeholders who participated in the very productive discussions that took place.
