Alisha Smith also known as ‘The Colourist’ is a young self- taught artist from Barbados, specializing in photorealistic portraiture and abstract realist landscapes. It all started almost a decade ago at the age of 14 when she picked up her first coloured pencil and she hasn’t looked back since. In fact, she went on to earn multiple Gold Awards for her participation in the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) and she was nominated for the Prime Minister’s Award for her photorealistic rendition of superstar Rihanna. It was also around this time she was approached and asked to do her first portrait commission of a newly wed couple. Since then she has had regular commission work and has also branched out to using other mediums such as graphite and acrylic paint.
Beyond portraiture Alisha has also taken a keen interest in landscape painting. She finds endless inspiration in nature and is utterly captivated by the characters of trees, which are often featured in her works. Ultimately, she strives to depict the untold stories of the scenes throughout Barbados, in a fresh captivating way. Contrasting her realistic depictions of human and pet faces, her landscapes are abstract impressionist depictions of scenes from her island adventures and are often a weave of radical colours and expressive brush work to enhance the narrative of each piece resulting in her unique and ever-evolving art style and visual language. Her works range from small to large and are also available as printed reproductions, customizable to the homes of many collectors whom she has worked with closely to elevate the aesthetic of their living and work spaces. As she continues to evolve as an artist, she looks forward to exploring new avenues, pushing the boundaries of her creativity, and inviting others to join her on this captivating visual journey through the heart of her art!
