The Ghana Caribbean Association in Ghana is “Celebrating Culture, Community, and Connection,” this June 1-8 for Caribbean week in Accra Ghana with many top Caribbean artists set to perform.
Malissa Garner, a Guyanese ex-pat living in Ghana and executive director of the Ghana Caribbean Association (CGA) in Ghana, told Caribbean Magazine Plus that since the Caribbean Week is hosted by the CGA, those in attendance will be from the Caricom region, Ghanaians, African diaspora from America and UK and other foreign nationals visiting and living in Ghana. “We have received full endorsement from the Diaspora Affairs Office of The President, Ghana Tourism Authority, Beyond The Return and other local authorities.”
She also said: “Along with Caribbean community, there will be performances from Jamaican, Trinidad artists and the program DJ is from Barbados to give an authentic Caribbean experience.
“The reason why Caribbean people in and out of Ghana should care about this event is it will highlight, showcase and promote the strength, diversity of the Caribbean culture in Ghana. As Caribbean people we tend to strive in all new environments, whether it’s USA, UK, Canada and now in Africa.”
A press release from the GCA about the event, said: “The vibrant and dynamic Caribbean culture takes center stage as Ghana Caribbean Association prepares to host Caribbean Week Ghana from June 1st to June 8th, 2024. This annual initiative aims to introduce and celebrate Caribbean culture while making stronger ties between the Caribbean diaspora and native Ghanaians.
“Caribbean Week Ghana will feature a diverse array of events designed to showcase the richness of Caribbean heritage and its positive impact on Ghanaian society. From June 1st’s Official Ribbon Cutting and Big Market Day, offering international shopping, entertainment, and informative sessions, to Family Fun Day on June 2nd, featuring authentic Caribbean food, a mini market, pool party, and games, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
It continued: “Dance enthusiasts won’t want to miss Salsa vs. Soca on June 2nd, led by the renowned Ghanaian dance school, Salsa In The City. And on June 7th, Steel Pan vs. Drums will captivate audiences with a Reggae Live Band showcase featuring Trinidadian Steel Pan player Knomaad and local Ghanaian drummers.
“The grand finale, Fete vs. Bashment Party on June 8th, promises a sensational closing celebration with a mix of dancehall, soca, calypso, chutney, and other music genres, ensuring an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
“DJ Serius from Barbados will be playing the hottest music to enhance your authentic Caribbean experience.”
