There are an estimated 476 million Indigenous Peoples in the world, living across 90 countries, and representing an estimated 7,000 languages and 5,000 different cultures. The Latin America and Caribbean region has one of the largest indigenous populations in the world with an estimated 800 different indigenous populations.
Today, CARICOM salutes our Indigenous Peoples, who are integral to our rich tapestry of cultures.
We celebrate their distinct attributes and recognize their indigenous knowledge systems.
We acknowledge the negative impact of colonialism and the resulting continuing challenges to their development. We remain committed to their further integration and advancement in the region.
Today’s theme, “Indigenous youth as agents of change for self-determination” aligns with CARICOM’s strategic focus on empowering and equipping our young people. It also underscores the need for policy makers to partner with indigenous youth to design appropriate interventions to develop their communities.
The Caribbean Community is committed to its mandate to promote and support a unified Region that is inclusive and that shares in economic, social and cultural prosperity.
Happy International Day of World Indigenous Peoples.
