COMMENTARY: Haiti at complicated impasse with gang control

By: Jude Elie

March 5, 2024

Today, our country, Haiti, is in a difficult and complicated impasse where gangs take control of the country by spreading terror, smashing, setting fire to paralyze state institutions and terrorizing the population who are running to escape brown bullets and death.

Today, we find ourselves at a decisive crossroads in the history of our country where the people say they are tired of poverty, hunger, and insecurity in all forms, which would seem to become a reality we accept in our lives as a people. We would even seem to become insensitive to the consequences of insecurity and this programmed violence that is ravaging all sectors of life in our country. It is as a cross, that those who put insecurity and this endless violence would want to transform themselves as the only means of control.

Today, in our country, Haiti, we find kidnapping, acts of banditry, wanting to take the place of work and hope for youth, and plunge our society into darkness and an unprecedented institutional crisis.

Today, in our country, Haiti, all institutions that are the pillars of our society such as Education, Labor, Commerce and Economy, etc., all these institutions are falling to the ground. This causes our country to plunge into a great distress, where the people do not know who to pray to help them.

This difficult moment in our history, creates a lot of discontent, fear, despair and uncertainty, where our people lose confidence in the justice system, social justice and economic justice. That’s why, some of our compatriots have chosen to apply their own interpretation of justice through what they call the “bare tree”.

However, when we carefully analyze the “bark wood”, in many cases, we have done ourselves harm, because many people who suffer these punishments are from the same community as us. Faced with the incompetence of the leaders and the weakness of our institutions, it is clear that the Haitian people must find sustainable and balanced solutions for these problems; but he will not be able to do this alone.

Today it is very important to denounce the sad reality that Haiti is living, without ignoring the size of the challenges that bind us together. It is difficult for us to demand concrete changes, and ask for measures that are more adapted to our reality, so that we can get out of the quagmire we are here.

We believe that, together, we can become champions of change and work together to build a better future for our country, Haiti.

We cannot let despair and violence dictate our destiny as a people.

Let’s stand up and make our voices heard.

Let’s work together for a Haiti without power, a Haiti that is sprouting hope and prosperity, and a Haiti that is STRONG.
