There was another mass shooting in America. This time in the state of Maine in the city of Lewiston. The shooter is still on the loose. How scary is that?
Other information about the shooter was that he was a former military personnel. Robert Card, the name of the suspect in the shootings, allegedly killed 18 people and injured 13 more at a restaurant on Wednesday.
Maine’s laws regarding firearms have been thrust into the spotlight following the attack. The state’s constitution declares: “Every citizen has a right to keep and bear arms and this right shall never be questioned.” However, subsequent legislation has qualified that right, in many cases making Maine’s gun laws less strict over the years due to changes originating both from the state legislature and a major voter referendum. Still, there remain several provisions intended to prevent guns from getting into the wrong hands.
I sincerely think the argument about guns only mask the underlying issue of hatred seeping in the hearts of the average American citizen’s hearts. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people.
But more than that if you think America would be able to peel away centuries of gun culture easily overnight then you are dreaming. The Congress could pass legislation banning all guns tomorrow, but there will still be guns in America and people who will have a penchant for hatred and violence to harm people like this recent mass shooter.
God be with the victims and we hope the suspect is found soon.
