It’s about time we got to the point where we can see Guatemala’s president elect, Bernardo Arevalo, finally make some concrete move to organise his government. This week he selected his cabinet a few days before he is expected to officially take the reins of the Guatemalan government away from Alejando Giammattei.
It has been a long road to get to this point, and we are not talking directly about the presidential elections where he came as a dark horse and ended up routing the media front-runner, former first lady Sandra Torres. The matter is that the Arevalo team has been a target of investigation by the outgoing Giammattei government on charges of election fraud. His campaign offices were raided and documents and other materials confiscated. He and his people have been harassed by pro-Giammattei officials.
Now that Arevalo is on his way in, sooner rather than later, would reprisals be on his mind? If I were anyone connected to the Giammattei regime I would get out of the country or just simply repent to Arevalo and hope he has mercy on you.
This is the part of the entire affair Giammattei’s team didn’t want to look at, but it is so obvious. As the old folks used to say, “time is longer than rope,” and now the rope is to an end and time is running out.
We support the Arevalo administration in their efforts to move Guatemala forward.
