EDITORIAL: Beryl barrels through the Caribbean

July 2, 2024

Well the hurricane season for 2024 started off to a record breaking start. Hurricane Beryl is the earliest recorded hurricane in the region. This is just a manifestation of the climate change patterns we are seeing as the weather gets warmer, of course storms would increase.

There is at least one reported death in Grenada on the island of Carriacou. It is said that a tree fell on his house, killing him. How dramatic and scary.

Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada said Carriacou is “flattened.” While we sympathize with Grenada at this time, we can assure Mitchell that there has been much worse. We will not minimize the pain and discomfort on Grenada at this time, however. They need as much help as they can get.

The Samaritan’s Purse said they are on their way with assistance. We thank them for stepping in as they have done in so many other instances around this region and around the world.

Beryl is now on the way to Jamaica as a Category 5 hurricane now. We would not want to see Jamaica after it lands. We have to hope and pray that they get secured and take this storm seriously.
