EDITORIAL: Can we ever shake the coke reputation?

September 26, 2023

The Caribbean is rife with narcotics, reports say. We can’t say its slander either, because we live here and we see the drug money flowing through our respective countries. But, are we any different than that of the US during prohibition or during their revolutionary period where almost everything was contraband?

We may never break free from the cocaine reputation. We love and in some instances, “need,” the money to help build these islands in the Atlantic. Who can doubt that had it not been for the coke money, a lot of these small and medium sized business would not ever have been born? A lot of these apartment complexes that house a good swathe of the masses was built in part or in whole with drug money. We are not excusing it, we just understand that is how it is.

We also must not forget America had their period of contraband, even if we only look at the prohibition era of the 1920’s.

The times are changing and we see the damage that crack cocaine has done to the African descent community in the Western world, we have to put a stop to the drug trafficking. The human cost of seeing a suffering crack addict should prick the heart of the most callous of us. Further to that the guns and ammunition that floods our streets are a direct result of the need to protect drug caches and turf. The times are being repeated far too often now that innocent people are being hit with stray bullets.

The fix to getting drugs off of our streets is not an easy task. We understand that but we have to try.
