EDITORIAL: Caribbean athletes just keep getting better!

August 9, 2022

We are entering into a golden age of Caribbean athletics. The amount of shining stars all through these Caribbean islands is amazing. WE congratulate all of the athletes competing at the Commonwealth Games, they are representing their countries well.

We have gold medallists from The Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and of course, Jamaica. We have shown up nicely and no other quarter of the Commonwealth realm holds a candle to our dominance in track and field at least.

The foundation legends like Hasley Crawford, Merlene Ottey and Frank Rutherford is showing dividends form the amount of young people inspired and working hard to become legends in their own time.

This Commonwealth Games has been more spectacular for Caribbean track and field athletes than it ever was in prior years. Maybe because there are so many gold medallists from different countries is what it is that has captivated us. We even have a gold medallist from Grenada, tiny little Grenada who is not known to produce many track stars, have come up with a winner in Lindon Victor in the decathlon.

We had winners in the experienced like Elaine Thompson-Herah to the babies in Barbados’s Sada Williams who has won the hearts of many around the world.

We need to continue to push this golden era in track and field to its limits. Sports tourism should be first and foremost in our thinking now. A Commonwealth Games in the Caribbean? Can we do it? It’s going to take some doing but it can be done.

But for now, let us just encourage our sporting authorities into investing in infrastructure for our athletes. All of whom have made us so very proud!
