Politics and elections in Central America is a cold hearted affair. In the past month we have seen one candidate- a former president of Panama- sent to jail for money laundering. We also saw a candidate in the Guatemalan elections offices raided by the police less than a month before the presidential runoff. This makes the election cycles in the Caribbean seem like kiddies parties in comparison. We can’t wait to see what the El Salvadorian elections look like next year. Bukele will not go down easily.
We dare not mention Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua. An extreme strongman who obliterates his opposition with efficiency.
All of this before we mention the recent assassination of an Ecuadorian presidential candidate just recently. Ecuador is not in our sphere, but Ecuador is so close to the Central American bloc that the cultural similarities are almost identical.
We pray for peace over the region because while elections are important, they are not important over that of the civil liberties of the everyday citizens.
At the end of the day the right person will win the election. God oversees all of this and it is in his infinite wisdom and grace to bestow upon who he wishes to serve in high office.
