EDITORIAL: Commonwealth Caribbean are victims of the past

January 25, 2025

The recent report by the UNDP in conjunction with the Swedish firm highlighted the issues with progressive policies taking form in the Commonwealth Caribbean. Due to our constitutions, of which were handed down to us by our former colonial masters in Great Britain upon our respective Independence dates, we are trapped in a funk of stagnation that has held generations of the people of these islands back.

That is just the start of it. To change the mechanisms that allow for change is a problem within itself. All that most of us have is either parliamentary action, or changing constitutions by referenda, the former would be problematic to say the least and the latter is a boondoggle that most often times are doomed to fail because of the political competition.

What can the Commonwealth Caribbean do in spite of this? The only thing we can hope for is a radical generational change in the mindset of the leaders that are up and coming to do the necessary sociopolitical work needed to change our style of government so that it is more conducive to our needs for the current and in anticipation for our needs in the future.

Right now, we are just stuck. Help!
