Aren’t we all glad to see Cuba and its President Diaz-Canel back to the loving arms of its Caribbean neighbours. Truth be told, they never left. But were hesitant to get involved because they didn’t know where many of us stood despite the Cold War being long since over and done with.
There is no more Capitalist v Communist tension in the air. While there may still be US v Russian tension in the air, it is not as ripe as it was between the 1960’so the 1980’s where we really were living under the threat of a nuclear holocaust. Thank God it has not come to that and we pray to God it never will come to that.
So this means Cuba can play with its friends freely now. We hope Cuba can share some of its medical technology with the region as they have eagerly shared their doctors with us over the past decades.
Let’s also hope this is the beginning of a new investment partnership with the wider Caribbean and the region can beat the Americans and Europeans to the doorstep on some prime opportunities in Cuba.
Despite it all, there is some fear an open Cuba will mean a threat to Caribbean tourism. We don’t believe that at all. People who want to go to Cuba, will go to Cuba and people that want to come to Jamaica, Bahamas or Barbados will come here. It’s that simple.
Plus, Cuba needs the infrastructure to accommodate the influx of tourists anyway. So it won’t be an overnight thing where Cuba opens up and the Caribbean tourism product outside of that just dries up.
In other news, Roosevelt Skerrit has won re-election in Dominica as projected. No Opposition party members ran any candidates and he just won on just showing up to the polls and the Dominica Labour Party just stood there and won. We congratulate Prime Minister Skerrit for his re-election and wish him all the best as he steadies Dominica to a brighter future.
