Never have we seen such a promising young leader like Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell of Grenada, continually make silly missteps that will certainly cause him at the polls next election. Not only are these missteps unnecessary, they are small and in some instances, petty.
An incident of a small unnecessary step was the reduction of the Citizenship by Investment input into the National Investment Fund from 40 percent to 10 percent. Apparently the International Monetary Fund believes that smoothing out revenues and fiscal accounts means more than saving ahead of time for rainy days. Like the raining day Grenada is having now with rebuilding after hurricane Beryl. Mitchell is using the very same fund he has defunded to rebuild from Beryl. So, we ask Mr Mitchell, what will Grenada do when there is a Hurricane Charlie or Darren? What fund will you be able to go back to then?
A second misstep, and this is of the pettier ones, was the monopolization of Carnival. There was no need to control artists by forcing them to sing only good songs that your National Democratic Congress administration likes. So, stacking the judging panel with sycophants loyal to you does not advance the cultural product. It is the political monopolization of the cultural spirit of Grenada. It is petty. Because people will be able to discern, without a sweet Calypso, whether or not they agree with what you are doing.
The polls will tell you this if you don’t shape up Mitchell. You came in with too much promise and vigour to be making petty, bitter old man moves. Be better. Be new generation.
