EDITORIAL: Fast week, just some short notes

May 6, 2022

Quite a bit went on this week. We just wanted to take a few quick shots at what had took place.

The huge story is obviously British Virgin Islands now former Premier, Andrew Fahie, being locked up on drug charges in Miami. His request for diplomatic immunity was denied by the US Attorney’s Office. What will happen now is that Fahie will stay in the US under the supervision of his daughter where he will remain until his trial in late May.

Another interesting note is that Barbados is changing to polymer notes. Quite interesting they are doing that, because everyone is trying to now change over into digital cash. I guess they are having the same problem with the digital cash as The Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean states in that people are not willing to part with hard cash because very few people know or want to know anything else. Asking a grandmother of 75 to pay for an item at her store with her smartphone is beyond her for the most part. In addition, many vendors don’t take digital cash. How can your coconut tart man or your roadside water boy accept digital cash and have a machine for it? They don’t even take credit and debit cards. We have a long way to go, but we will get there.

Also this issue of the International Criminal Court getting more active in the climate change and carbon emissions enforcement is an important issue. We can’t have climate justice when no one is willing to enforce climate justice on the companies that pollute.

If we are serious, we need a court and a tribunal to take the Royal Caribbean’s and the Exxon’s to court for their pollution. While there have been successful prosecutions to date, these prosecutions and court proceedings are jurisdictional by nature and knee jerk reactions to events that have taken place.

We need an International Climate Court of Justice. The earth needs it. Where states and individuals can take their claims to a high court, be heard and the matter adjudicated. But this is just a fantasy for us because we know the larger countries like the US and in the European Union and now with China, Brazil and Russia are full of shit when it comes to talking about making significant changes to their carbon footprint. It’s all lies and bullshit. But we wait and pray.

The last and lingering matter is with this lawsuit put in by His Excellency Oleg Firer against a US Republican senate candidate for Pennsylvania, Everett Stern. What a misguided individual this Stern is turning out to be, he has his facts all wrong according to HE Firer. We have contacted Stern’s office for comment on the lawsuit for defamation but they have not responded to our calls at all. I guess we are too small on his radar to warrant a response. But when you defame someone, anyone, you should back it up when requested.

That’s all folks. Enjoy your weekend!
