EDITORIAL: From heavy rains to fire- What a time to be alive!

May 28, 2024

It was just a few short years ago we were talking about devastating floods that emanated from intense hurricanes in the Caribbean. The Bahamas, Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica can attest and so too can several other Caribbean countries.

But now, we must contend with not only excessive heatwaves but raging bush fires that are sparking up randomly due to the intense heat.

The climate challenge has just taken a different turn because even though we have suffered from flooding, water is still scarce, making putting out the bush fires a huge problem.

Some fires have been left to burn out on their own, while others are being beaten back with firebreaks and other various means of firefighting techniques.

All of this to say is that the larger polluting countries and companies need to do even more than just cut CO2 emissions, but there are extant issues that need to be addressed in the now. Primary of which is the lack of catastrophic response resources.

We cannot burn to death while we are surrounded by water. That is just perverse. We also should not be made to suffer any more than we already are when the polluters have it in their power to do more for smaller, developing nations.

We need to continually hold their feet to the fire.
