EDITORIAL: Happy East Indian Arrival Day!

May 30, 2023

Today is East Indian Arrival Day in Trinidad and Tobago and other parts of the Caribbean who observe this day, despite there are some countries who celebrate later on down in the month of June.

We often tend to think the Caribbean is made up only of Afro-descent people. But that is not the entire truth. Dating back to the 1800’s, East Indian immigrants were being shipped into these islands by the European colonisers. While slavery was abolished in the late 1800’s, there was still a need to develop these plantation states since the African labour supply refused to follow the European settlers post abolishment of slavery because they just could not believe the European’s man’s words.

So we have to realize how the forefathers of our East Indian brothers and sisters got here and then also, hail their accomplishments in the Caribbean. From diplomacy, to medicine, to law and science, they have an imprint all around the Caribbean and we at CMP salute them on this Indian Arrival Day.

Stay blessed!
