EDITORIAL: Jamaica is upside down now!

February 11, 2022

While we watch Marion Hall/Lady Saw versus Spice and Shenseea and the other young female artists, the country is being drenched in the blood of the people as there is now over 100 murders for the country and it is just early February.

The numbers don’t lie, this is not some hit-job on Jamaica- like we care.  But this is a matter of guns and violence in our Caribbean, because believe me, if it started in Jamaica it will spill over to the other smaller countries because we are all one people. The same problems causing the bloodshed in Jamaica will happen in Bermuda, Dominica, Dominican Republic, The Bahamas, Barbados and all over if they don’t find out a method to cap and control the killing.

But, I know, Lady Saw possibly leaving the church to return to dancehall music may have our attention for the moment. Rihanna getting pregnant is big news now, so let’s focus on that too. I know, I know, let us focus on the important things.

You can’t even engage Jamaicans on their own social media platforms on the matter either. Platforms to discuss things like cultural issues and social issues. *le sigh*

But why such a sudden spike in the murders? The Honourable Dr Horace Chang, Minister of National Security, clearly does not have the answers- or else there would be a cessation in the killings. Prime Minister Andrew Holness is preoccupied with forcing COVID-19 vaccine mandates that no one in Jamaica wants except for him and a few select elites in Jamaica, so he isn’t watching the matter closely. Could it be the COVID-19 unemployment and hardships causing all of the disturbance? Could it be the Russians? Who knows?

We would like to get to the root of it too, eve though it sounds cliched. Because I kid you not, if you believe it’s just about Jamaica, just wait until the problem behind the murders seeps out into the other Caribbean islands, then you will understand this editorial and say, Caribbean Magazine Plus did say that. Let’s hope it won’t be too late!
