EDITORIAL: Let’s at least try to have a good summer.

Remember when they said at the onset of the coronavirus outbreak that the virus can’t stand heat? Remember that? The world health officials have not changed their position on that. But they have changed on almost every other safety precaution during this pandemic, from the virus does not live on surfaces as once thought to the spit can travel more than three feet and infect someone. But not the heat of the summer, no. That has not changed.

The logic is that with people outside coupled with the virus preferring the cold weather to linger and grow, the summer time would/should be the safest times during this global pandemic.

So, if we understand that, can we try to have a better summer than we had in 2020 when the shock of the lockdowns had us stunned in out boots? We now know that lockdowns and curfews are here for a while until everyone is either immunized against the COVID-19 or we achieve herd immunity.

I’m hearing places are opening up. Saba has opened up its borders COVID-test free to all vaccinated visitors, so too has The Bahamas. Trinidad on the other hand just locked down on Monday due to a rise in the infection rate, Jamaica is on its last week of nationwide lockdown right now and an announcement should be forthcoming from the government on the next steps.

But I think we can still enjoy God’s blessings this summer. Even though I’m still on lockdown like you, I consider it still a time to enjoy what life has to offer this summer and especially since we have endured the hard brunt of 2020’s initial wasted year on lockdown. Lawd Ha’ Mercy!
