EDITORIAL: Martinique needs its Independence

October 15, 2024

What a muddy mess Martinique has found itself in. The people are in the streets. I hear the sound of Independence in the air. This seems to be the only solution for the people of Martinique, self determination.

They can do it, but it will be hard. Firstly, English is not their first language. Being next to the world’s largest economy in the US, they will face problems like Haiti but may not be so severe.

Secondly, who cares about Martinique? What do they have to offer? This will be the general sentiment if they decide to go it alone.

Lastly, can they trust themselves? This will be the big issue. Who among them can be trusted to father the nation to self-determination and Independence? How you start will be important.

This is how I see the cards for Martinique if they take the big plunge, because let’s face it, the French tether is fragging out. They are more of a burden to you than a help, and they probably see you too as a burden more than a help.

Gone are the days when foreign colonies were in vogue. Ain’t nobody gat time for that. France has its own problems.
