Have we forgotten our history in Central America with the amount of military junta’s and dictatorships over its history, from the Arbenz government overthrown in Guatemala in 1954 to put in place a series of authoritarian dictators to the collapse of the Somoza government in Nicaragua in 1979 to put in place the first iteration of the Daniel Ortega government in 1985, who is again the president of Nicaragua again after having a brief hiatus and then winning the presidential elections in 2007 and having remained there ever since?
At least it appears as if the Ortega government won’t be overthrown, but that does not say much about the current wave of political instability in Central America. And we’re not talking about the politicians either. We’re talking about the people and the institutions that seem to be losing confidence in the democratic process. It will make way for more chaos and nefarious political actors who will further destabilize your countries like how Haiti has been in a perpetual state of tailspin.
Central America has come so far from the Cold War era is heavy-handedness the US displayed when they were fighting off the Soviet Union and communism in the region. We are not fighting that again, however we are fighting between two worlds- The West and the Far-East, and it is getting messier slowly and steadily.
By the way, the story we ran on Central America bulking up on military power is something we should be concerned about, because not only do we have too many guns in the region and these weapons will seep into the Caribbean. But, what is Central America arming for and who against? There is no impending invasion from China, Russia or even the US, Brazil or Canada, so who will they fight? Quite clearly they will fight one another. This is a very sad turn of events and something we can mitigate against, but true to form as is these days, America is asleep and the Organisation of American States are useless. But then, in another 10 years when it is all shot to shit, Americans in the Southwest will be complaining about the influx of migrants trying to crawl into the borders to escape war and social collapse in their respective countries. Oh, they have not seen a migration problem yet. Be on guard.
