EDITORIAL: The Chinese are back, but do they owe us anything?

September 24, 2021

They’re baaaaack! The Chinese are back and again they are coming with money and threats of more money. Considering they put the whole world at a standstill wit COVID-19, it’s the least they can do.

But they don’t owe us anything. The Chinese have spent a lot of money in the region already in The Bahamas and now doing so in Barbados and threatening to do even more in Trinidad and Tobago as in the twin island nation they are setting up stronger trade ties.

Check the contents for COVID-19 I say and take the money/help and run. This region needs every dollar it could get after tourism collapsed and national economies came to a standstill due to the COVID-19.

As we speak about the COVID-19, some 32 percent of the people that died worldwide came from Latin America and the Caribbean, with the same region only representing 20 percent of infections worldwide, signalling that we are becoming infected and dying more than we are becoming infected.

Blame that on the vaccination hesitancy as the Pan American Health Organisation said that only 25 percent of the people in the region have been vaccinated, despite the first batches of vaccines being available to countries in the region since the summer of last year.

A lot of people simply just don’t trust the white man’s medicines any more, especially if they tell you they are trial medicines that not even their own citizens were being strongly encouraged to take in the onset. Made even worse now by the need for these booster shots for some of the various vaccines.

We can’t just be left to die, we need to take the vaccine. Yes, I know, European science has done a lot of damage to minority people and people of colour. I agree with that. However, the benefits far outweigh the risks in this instance. Plus, European scientists have done a lot more good in the world despite their infamy and dubious practices even 30 years ago- it’s a different world now.
