EDITORIAL: The new age Middle Passage.

September 8, 2023

We are witnessing the new age Middle Passage at the Darien Gap with the amount of migrants, a healthy amount of them are children under the age of 16. Just that with this new Middle Passage, the people are not bound with shackles and chains, forced into slavery.

However, they are volunteering for the journey, much like the early African ancestors had volunteered for a better life, but are finding that the passage this time is not meant for them to make it to their final destination in any way, shape or form.

For the most part, many of these migrants are leaving bondage and hardship, looking for a better life in America. They come heavy and burdened, looking for relief, but the door, in many respects are closed shut to them.

The journey, however, is still treacherous as it was for our African ancestors. Many will not make it to the end. Some will be forced to turn back and face their trouble in their homeland. Some will make it and hopefully make a better way of life for themselves in America. May God, our Father, be with them all.

What is being lost in all of this is the amount of young people, with little or no life experience, willing to take the Middle Passage/Darien Gap, all on their own. Such bravery is hardly ever seen, but here they are on their way to better. May we never forget their courage or struggle in real time.
