It’s such a wonderful thing when the Caribbean decides to join forces for a greater purpose. Just recently the Caribbean Development Bank is calling on all members to support a Regional Security Trust Fund. This makes sense, considering how the region has been assaulted from international gangs and even more so now that the world is becoming more volatile and the global powers are heading towards increased conflict with one another. When these things happen, the Caribbean always gets swallowed up and divided.
While we dare not to speak over the illustrious Dr Gene Leon, the CDB’s president, but we hasten to add that the trust fund should be triggered by events like natural disasters, heightened conflict like what we see in Haiti and even in the digital age, cyber security measures.
The Caribbean is vulnerable and at risk of attack and destabilisation from all sides and a trust fund for security just makes sense. Considering that the Caribbean is also financially strapped, joining forces for a trust fund would enable us to share the risk between each member country and also be involved in each other’s solution to an attack or pressure.
We wish this trust fund the best successes as now we also read that four Caribbean countries have joined forces with Mexico in a $10bn lawsuit against US gun manufacturers. No doubt, the CDB smells money coming down the pipeline and wants to position itself to be useful to receive some of that cash. LOL… Pretty bright move by Dr Leon and Co.
That notwithstanding, it is a brilliant idea, considering the pressure and headwinds coming down the pike for the region.
