EDITORIAL: The road ahead for Grenada.

June 28, 2022

The road ahead for Grenada and its new Prime Minister is going to be a hard one, but not overwhelming. Hard because they still have to battle COVID-19 in addition to trying to keep power with a strong opposition. Additionally, the Prime Minister is relatively young- 44 years old, but age can mean nothing or all of somethings.

He probably has to knife some of the senior politicians in his own party who believe he is too young to take the reins of the country. This will begin to take shape in the politics, soon and sure. What will need to happen is the former Prime Minister, Keith Mitchell, will be needed to knife the power hungry internal opposition within the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He has to use Dr Mitchell to his advantage and hopes that Dr Mitchell loves Grenada more than he loves power and decides to call it quits for any more runs for office or leadership in Grenada and just decides to sit back and be a senior statesman. One can only hope.

I believe outgoing Prime Minister Dr Mitchell loves his country and wants the best for it, despite being in power for way too long. So, we just have to wish the young Dickon Mitchell all the best as he forms his government.

A second matter for Grenada is young Mr Mitchell will need to show investors that he is capable, honest and competent enough that they can trust him with their money, and for some of them, their life’s savings. This is no joke.

The great thing is that in Grenada, the NDC does not have a powerful majority in the House, so there is little leeway for Dickon Mitchell and the NDC to get too complacent and hunker into laziness and unchecked corruption.

We wish them all the best as they progress.
