Will the United States continue to soften its tone with Nicholas Maduro in Venezuela now that it is clear he is not budging from office? Regardless of how he got there, he is there and you have to at least keep the channels of dialogue open.
This magazine is no champion or fan of the Maduro regime. We believe he is not even half the leader Hugo Chavez was, but with all of the hatred and machismo with false pride and arrogance. Look at his country? For someone who says he loves the country he has a very funny way of showing he loves Venezuelans- They are running away from his ineptitude and ignorance. But, he is the leader of their country and if anyone that was supposed to be the adult in the region it should be the United States.
Yes! The US decided to negotiate with terrorists and swapped Venezuelan prisoners for those Citgo employees the Maduro regime took hostage a few years back. A minor sacrifice for the larger objective of opening the channels of communications more than they were in recent times.
Just think, a few short months back the US had not invited Venezuela to the Summit of the Americas. How petty. The Biden administration must see this as a low point. They are supposed to be bigger than that. But, this is prototypical to how insular and selfish the American society, its leadership in Washington as a microcosm, has become.
Hopefully new American thinkers can talk sense that the common man can hear so they could understand and see how really important America is and get back their prestige, because this petty look is unbecoming.
As disgusting working with the Maduro regime may seem to many of us, at least talk to them and see where their heads are.
